Did you see it?

I thought it was a pretty decent film. Whose not a fan of Kevin Bacon in a Horror film right?

The Darkness is a film that came out under Blumhouse Productions. It seems like they crank movie after movie on a monthly basis.

The film has already doubled its budget in the box office. It hasn’t even been a full two weeks since it came out.

Unfortunately, that’s something a lot of films can’t do, and can only wish.

No wonder Blumhouse cranks out these bad boys all the time.

One thing I enjoyed from the film was how they meshed common themes to make something innovative. The old Hollywood saying comes to mind, “give me something the same only a little bit different.”

The Darkness takes place around the Grand Canyon. When I think of a setting like that, The Hills Have Eyes comes to mind. But the Darkness plays with a Native American supernatural theme.

They put a unique twist in a very common element of Horror films. Or at least from my point of view.

This is what Blumhouse does very well. They give audiences what they want without regurgitating the same common themes you see all the time.

It wasn’t the same common spells and rituals you see in supernatural movies.

One of my favorite supernatural movies of the last decade is The Possession of Michael King. It came out a couple years ago.

David Jung, the writer/director of the film takes us through the journey of a supernatural movie at the Genre Summit.

It was made with a budget of one million dollars and grossed over $13 million.

This all happened on the V.O.D. platform by the way. David is now directing bigger blockbuster studio films as a result.

David gives you tools and ways to think. When you are crafting your project you can do so with a unique hook.

Giving you an edge over the competition and making something distributors will want to get out there for ya.

Here’s just a little bit of what David talks about:

How do you stand out and make something original?
Taking advantage of jump scares.
Crafting fun and originals takes on spells and rituals.
Making a unique location in a rather not so unique location.
The most important aspect of a supernatural movie you need to be aware of.
This was definitely one of my favorite workshops as I’ve already been implementing what he preaches.

These workshops will take you to the next level in your career.

See ya on the “inside”.
